How an essay differs from a report
A report gathers sources and lays out the topic — your own opinion is barely called for. An essay is the opposite: a position is the point.
That is why an essay carries no plan and no section headings. The text runs continuously, and paragraphs are joined by the argument rather than by headings.
Marking differs too. A report is judged on coverage and sources; an essay on how consistently the argument is held. Plenty of material with no visible position scores badly.
